Tight Spot

It was on the thirteenth day, or rather the evening preceding the thirteenth day, before Ireena's ill-fated wedding to the dreaded Strahd that our band of inexplicably cohesive heroes found themselves in a bit of a tight spot. And by "tight spot," we mean the kind of situation that would make even the most hardened adventurers wince and consider a career change to something less life-threatening, like accounting or perhaps, in Barovia, vampire-slaying door-to-door salesmanship.

Destiny, having just been revived by Serenity, was immediately greeted by a magic missile that did nothing to improve her already dour mood. As if that weren't enough to dampen anyone's spirits, the entire party suddenly found a rather lot of vampires dimension doored into a scene of utter chaos. You see, dimension door is a rather nifty trick that allows one to pop in and out of existence like some sort of cosmic jack-in-the-box.

In the ensuing mayhem, Serenity and Zuleika made a run for it, while Destiny attempted, with limited success, to dimension door out with Hoskgak. Strahd, being the charming host that he was, decided to make Hoskgak's armor stick to him like an overly attached limpet. Destiny's escape attempt was thwarted as she was unceremoniously put to sleep, while Hoskgak struggled with his uncooperative helmet, which seemed to have taken a sudden dislike to his face.

As it turned out, no one could escape the clutches of their sinister host. Destiny awoke in an empty void, with the enigmatic Eliel speaking to her, offering her more power and a new lease on life in exchange for a small favor: the utter annihilation of Strahd and the claiming of all Barovia in Eliel's name. A small price to pay, one might think, for one's own survival.

Destiny found herself back in the land of the living, albeit hanging upside down in a cell that had clearly seen better days. Using her newly acquired lightning powers, she made short work of her restraints and the cell itself, and soon discovered her fellow adventurers in a similar state of confinement. Fortunately, they had all been in this situation before, so they knew the drill.

With a renewed sense of purpose, Destiny brought Serenity and Hoskgak back into the fold, pledging their service to Eliel. Zuleika, though understandably distressed by having to watch her husband meet his end again and again, remained stalwart. Serenity agreed to the arrangement with some reluctance, while Hoskgak found himself with an unexpected new companion: the ever-elusive Silenzo.

Feeling rather pleased with herself, Destiny left a message on the wall as a taunt for their captor: "Heroes of Barovia cannot be killed! Strahd will die!" With that, they set off for the catacombs to locate their missing equipment. One could hardly expect them to defeat an evil overlord without their trusty gear, after all.

As they stumbled through the misty catacombs, opening doors that led to such delightful sights as dying vampires and the occasional ghost, they eventually came upon the tomb of Strahd's brother. It was here that they paused, taking a moment to regroup and steel themselves for the battles that lay ahead. For in the game of Barovian politics, there was only one rule: expect the unexpected.
