Session 35-37 : The Great Escape 2

“Oh my gods, they killed Kenny. TWICE!”.

Ok, the escape wasn’t so great for Kenny. In fact, one might argue that he didn’t really escape at all, unless one counts being blasted out of existence by a lightning bolt up the arse, projected off the finger of an animated suit of armour an escape, then yes, Kenny escaped. But even then, it would be a stretch to call his particular escape “Great”.

Destiny, however, feels her escape was definitely of the "Great" category, since rather than being stuck in the dungeon of Strahd’s castle, as she was doomed to be a moment ago, she is currently standing several hundred miles away in the safety of the Abbey in Krezh.

What’s more, all her companions (if you once again discount Kenny, as so often we have to) have made it out along with the prize they went to steal - Emil the ex-leader of the werewolf pack whom Strahd had kept prisoner. If they could help Emil reclaim the pack, then the Heroes of Barovia will have once again made great allies and harnessed the power of the wolf pack to aid in their fight against Strahd, albeit subversively.

Many future historians will no doubt speculate just how the Heroes of Barovia achieve such a mighty feat right from under Strahd’s nose. We shall leave the colourful accounts to those inclined to write colourful accounts. For this particular account, we shall stick with FACTS.

Zuleika is a female werewolf with fearsome fighting capabilities. But despite her physique (which is more Hoskgak than Ireena), she is straight, and as such, she married a male werewolf - Emil. Emil, in comparison, is a bit of a tweed. He was, somehow, the leader of the werewolf pack, but not surprisingly lost his leadership in a challenge. After that incident, Strahd locked Emil in a cell in Castle Ravenloft’s dungeon to stop all the in-fighting in the pack.

The Heroes of Barovia agreed to help Zuleika rescue her husband, help him reclaim his leadership. In return the werewolf pack will aid their fight against Strahd.

Zuleika, Destiny, Silenzo and Kenny headed to Castle Ravenloft.

They arrived at night. Kenny scouted around. Kenny got killed. Kenny was brought back. Scouted again. Killed again.

Meanwhile, the gang scaled a wall to the parapet of the castle and was promptly chased off by a finger pointing, lightning shooting animated suit of armour. By some miracle, they made it to the dungeon, which was flooded and booby trapped. Zuleika and Silenzo fell into the trap and each was locked up in a cell.

Destiny found Emil and saved everyone… or did she?

P.S. Volenta (one of Strahd’s wives) discovered them and gave chase, but the heroes found a magical portal in the basement and were able to activate it and teleported themselves to the Abbey.

P.P.S. During their journey the castle, Destiny learned from Danika at the Blue Waters Inn that the Revenants have became more active. Rumour was that there’s a mansion at the top of a hill near Krezh at Argynvostholt. Legend has it that there was once a dragon there.

P.P.P.S. Serenity decided to stay with Ireena to protect her from Strahd. Rictavio cooked lunch. Serenity and Ireena ate lunch. Ireena was poisoned.

And so it was, the Heist of Yesterhill went down in history as one of the greatest heists in all of Barovia, told and retold to many as an inspiration of courage and sacrifice. The origin and many facts of the event are no longer known. But this much we do know for certain: Hoskgak the half-orc did exist and the heist probably happened around 400 years after Barovia was taken by Strahd. 004 : Serenity in the Storm

The barkeep placed the drinks in a row on the bar, glancing between Serenity and the door, as if expecting a large party to arrive to join her. She paid him little attention and filled her travelling flask with glass after glass for the journey, drank one to remember absent family, another for friends lost and finally left the last glass standing alone on the bar as she left to find lodgings for the night. Always a lonely glass for the Abbot. A toast left un-drunk for all the good in the world. The Storm The Snowflake Mountains were vast, slicing upwards through the clouds. The monastery, carved into the rock face of a nameless peak, sat just above the cloud layer. On a calm day, the clouds lapped against the stairs leading to the monastery entrance like a layer of foam. To descend the mountain was to submerge into the clouds as if disappearing under the sea. Tight Spot

It was on the thirteenth day, or rather the evening preceding the thirteenth day, before Ireena's ill-fated wedding to the dreaded Strahd that our band of inexplicably cohesive heroes found themselves in a bit of a tight spot. And by "tight spot," we mean the kind of situation that would make even the most hardened adventurers wince and consider a career change to something less life-threatening, like accounting or perhaps, in Barovia, vampire-slaying door-to-door salesmanship. Destiny, having just been revived by Serenity, was immediately greeted by a magic missile that did nothing to improve her already dour mood. As if that weren't enough to dampen anyone's spirits, the entire party suddenly found a rather lot of vampires dimension doored into a scene of utter chaos.
