Session 30: The Coin
A hooded man with a longbow at his back entered a tavern in Daggerford. Shortly after a short but moody guy approached his table and began talking.
- I have brought you 50 gold- He put a pouch on the table and move it forward towards the hooded man.
- Who do you think I am? A whore? Things don’t work this way. You have to buy the coin. Only with it I will carry the job.
As the waiter approached to leave a beer jar on the table, the hooded man stood up and left the moody guy and his pouch on the table.
A few hours later the short guy approached a hooded person at the market.
- Here, your damn coin.
- Well, it is in a way a damn coin. But I prefer to call it, a silent coin. And he did a mischievous smile while picking the coin from his hand.
Without further chats the hooded man left the market with the coin in his pocket. He knew a new contract was in, just another job.
At the outskirts of Daggerford, a camp was set for the Vistani. The hooded man has tracked them down as he listened to a conversation about purchasing some goods for 2 cats and a half-orc at the market. He was lucky, his next job was so distinguishable. Usually he had to do a lot more tracking. It was removing part of the fun, but at the same time, one could do with easy jobs every now and then.
The Vistani were quite easy to convince. Just a few coins and they will lead him closer to the party. Unfortunately they didn’t tell him the problems it will bring to him to enter those lands.
Along his path, he learned a bit more about the party, apparently those guys enjoyed the chatter too much. By the time he reached their camp at Vallaki he almost knew everything about them. A cat with a tail that speaks like there is no tomorrow, another cat that likes to drink spirits instead of water, and a half orc that barely speaks and gets excited by armour and flaming weapons. What a combination. For sure they were having fun in this land. People were rather dark, vineyards hardly produce and armour, let along flaming weapons will be harder to find than virginity in taverns. What a place, but well, a job is a job.
Every town he passed by asking about the party was hardly amused by hearing about them. The so called heroes of Barovia were actually delivering more chaos than good. Leaving towns partly devastated at their path. The last known location, Krezk, wasn’t different. A blood bath in the town centre and the few remaining left starving. Perhaps it was too pretentious of them to call themselves heroes.
They entered the woods north of Krezk, it was a challenge to track the footsteps of the cats in that setting, but it was a blessing to have on their party a heavy armoured sloppy orc.
Suddenly, out of nowhere a pack of wolves surrounded him. With quick movements he managed to deal with them before they hit him, but a werewolf was leading the charge. Without proper gear, he was just buying time, but he will need to flee. He was hardly damaging it. To his surprise, the cat without the fancy tail appeared and saved the night. That was quite a twist of luck, two in one go. As a token of appreciation, and knowing he landed the last clue he needed, he handed his coin to the cat. Perhaps he knows, or maybe doesn’t, but he threw the coin saying “For you to use on others”.
The party gathered again in the forest, the half orc was more dead than alive, but the guy was still dreaming about a flaming sword. It is the blessing of fools, they get so obsessed that it actually soothes their existence. Strangely he got accepted quite fast into the gang, and they even trusted him to do a shift. Rather interesting to have this kind of trustworthy people on such environment, he could have been a killer.
With the advantage of the night and the rest of them sleeping, he finished his job.
The day after, the half orc was even more dead than before, if that could be possible, and the drinking cat was upset, as she has never seen a dead person. Strange, given how devastated they have left the towns they visit.
With a disgust gesture, Serenity took the coin and tossed it towards the hooded man. Before he could catch it, Destiny jumped and pick it in the air. Can I keep it? Can I keep it? The hooded man nodded, and said - sure, a job is a job, no matter who stats with it.
By the way, said Destiny, what is your name?
The hooded man removed the cover and said- Da Morte, Silenzo Da Morte.
